From the Certosa di San Martino, a little searching around the Vomero area brought us to another funicular, the Funicolare di Chiaia, which took us down into a business area which was near the Naples waterfront.

A sudden rainstorm motivated us to seek shelter, and we found it in the Galleria Umberto I, a 19^th Century shopping mall.

We looked around the stores a little, and found both merchandise and food to be on the pricey side.  When the rain let up, we went in search of a more affordable place to eat lunch.  We weren’t having much luck, but then we saw a sign on the sidewalk pointing into an unlikely-looking alley, promising food at a place called La Chiacchierata (Italian for "gossip").  We gave it a try, and were quite happy with the result.  The restaurant (actually probably a trattoria) was nicely kept and reasonably priced, and the food was good.  It was pretty empty when we arrived, but this may have been because it was somewhat past the peak lunch hour.

From La Chiacchierata we went looking for the Piazza del Plebiscito, where there were things to see.
